It's All About Hope!

Hope is wearing a t-shirt to protect her skin
Something bad had happened to the jet-black dog with the soft brown eyes. She was brought to the shelter by the Ark City Police Service Officer in October; her hair matted and full of stickers. The condition of her fur wasn't the worst of her problems though; the Labrador retriever mix also suffered from road rash and a broken hind leg. The dog had been hit by a car and needed help!

Shelter staff immediately took the dog in and named her Hope--hope is what they had for her. Hope was examined by Dr. Grimes, who was filling in at the shelter clinic while shelter vet Dr. Gatton was on vacation. Dr. Grimes determined that the broken leg had to be amputated. The surgery was successful, and Hope went home with staff member Amy Kopfer to recuperate and be fostered.

The leg healed well, but after a few days at Amy's house, large patches of skin started coming off of Hope's side and leg. Alarmed, Amy took Hope to Dr. Grimes, who consulted with Dr. Swaim, a retired veterinary wound specialist living in Cowley County. Dr. Swaim thought the skin was dying, because Hope might have been burned by a muffler or dragged during the accident. The only solution was removing the dead skin, so new skin could grow, and both doctors went to work.

Judy and Melvin Thomas had just lost their dog and were still mourning. When Dr. Grimes told Judy about Hope and that she needed a home, Judy replied that they weren't ready yet for a new companion. She did agree to visit Hope, just to prove her point. One look into Hope's soulful eyes was all it took for Judy to change her mind. This dog wasn't going anywhere but home with her! Judy's husband Melvin, an amputee himself, was only too thrilled to welcome the three-legged dog into their family. The Thomas' signed up for the Foster to Adopt Program, and Hope is now being loved and cared for at their home, until she is fully rehabilitated and ready for adoption.

Hope's skin is growing back, she's getting around well on three legs, and best of all, she has a new furever family who loves her dearly just the way she is. This family will look forward with Hope!

New skin is growing back; Hope is healing well!

Hope's life was saved due to the collaboration between the PSO, shelter staff, Drs. Grimes and Swaim, the Thomas', and you--our donors. A huge thank you to all of you!

Whatever Happened to Baby Girl?

Meet Baby Girl. She was found on the streets of Ark City and brought in as a stray. This 2-year old Great Pyrenees mix was not only skinny, but also had a broken hind leg and a major infection. Despite her ordeal, Baby Girl was nothing but sweet and loving. Thanks to our supporters, we were able to take this precious girl to Ark Vet Associates to give her the care she needed. Her broken leg was amputated and a foster home was found where Baby Girl was given a chance to heal. Being a tripod didn't slow this sweetheart down, and she was recently adopted!

Each year we take in many animals who need special care, but we only have limited resources. Next year, we are facing a $7,500 budget cut by the County. We need members and sponsors now more than ever! Please consider becoming a member for $20 a year, so we can help more animals like Baby Girl. You can become a member through our website www.cowleycountyhumanesociety.org (click on "membership") or by sending a payment directly to the shelter. You will receive a membership magnet as a small thank you from us, but the animals, whose lives will be saved, will thank you forever!

CCHS is 501c3 non-profit organization, meaning donations are tax-deductible.

Two Girls With a Plan

Alyssa and Sadie Cohrs are Individual Girl Members of the Girl Scouts--due to their busy schedules they are not able to be part of a troop, but can do the same activities that girls in troops do.

One of these activities is community service. Alyssa and Sadie both want to be veterinarians and they love animals, so they decided to organize a dog wash to benefit dogs, their owners and the animals at the shelter.

Alyssa and Sadie were not able to do the dog wash at home, so they approached Two Rivers Co-op in Ark City to ask if they could use the store's dog washing station. Not only did the owners say "yes", but also donated all supplies!

On a Saturday morning, the girls and their family bathed, blow-dried and beautified numerous dogs in exchange for a donation. Their hard work paid off and they donated $182 to the shelter! Thank you,
Alyssa, Sadie, their family, and Two Rivers Co-op!

Ten Dogs Get the Ride of Their Life

October 21st, 4:30 a.m.: It was still dark when the shelter director, Teresa Harden, and several board members gathered at the shelter to walk some lucky dogs and get them ready to board PetSmart's Rescue Waggin'. Six adult dogs and four puppies boarded the van; some went to Chicago, others to Wisconsin with an overnight stay in Missouri. These dogs will have a great chance of finding new homes quickly!
